What is Roundup Weed Killer?

Monsanto’s Roundup Weed Killer is one of the most popular weedkillers in the world, because it kills pests with minimal damage to crops and the environment. It is sprayed on entire fields to kill weeds that would prevent crops from thriving. Roundup is also used by landscapers, nursery workers, as well as by homeowners on their home gardens and yards to eliminate common weeds. Because of Monsanto’s advertising campaign, it was widely considered one of the safest herbicides, until new research emerged from the International Agency for Research on Cancer linking it to several types of blood cancer.

The Troubling Chemical in Roundup

The main ingredient in Roundup Weed Killer is glyphosate. IARC announced that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015. IARC based its findings that glyphosate is carcinogenic after tests showed that glyphosate caused DNA and chromosomal damage in human cells. This damage can lead to types of blood cancer.

Complaints About the Weed Killer

Several farmers, landscapers and home users who have developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma have come forward with their suspicions that the cancer was caused by exposure to Roundup Weed Killer. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that results in the body producing too many abnormal lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

Signs and Symptoms of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Common symptoms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma include:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Swollen belly
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Shortness of breath or cough
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia

If you have experienced any of these symptoms after exposure to Roundup Weed Killer, visit your doctor immediately.

Who Is At Risk?

Those most at risk of developing cancer as a result of Roundup Weed Killer exposure include farm workers, landscapers, nursery workers, and others in occupations that require frequent use of herbicides like Roundup on crops. People who use Roundup for their own home gardens and lawns are also at risk, if they have used the herbicide regularly.

Has Anyone Ever Sued Over Roundup’s Side Effects?

At least 15 lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto over the carcinogenic qualities of Roundup. One of those is an ongoing lawsuit between Monsanto and a former California landscaper for the County of Los Angeles. In this lawsuit, the plaintiff claims that regular occupational exposure to glyphosate caused him to develop cancer.

In another lawsuit filed by a school teacher, the plaintiff claims that she developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after spraying her property every two weeks with Roundup for over 8 years.

In yet another lawsuit filed by a former coffee grower in Hawaii, the plaintiff claims she developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma as a result of using Roundup Weed Killer on her commercial crops from 1995 to 2004.
