UPS Stores, Inc. is the latest company to be hit with a data breach targeting customers’ personal information. According to the company, 51 of its nearly 4,500 stores nationwide have been hit by a computer virus that was discovered when an IT security firm, retained only after UPS received a government bulletin warning of a specific type of malware, found the very same malware on the company’s computer systems.
Morgan & Morgan’s attorneys are looking into potential lawsuits against UPS Stores Inc. and need to hear from customers who may have had their personal information compromised to aid in their investigation.
According to the IT company’s findings, UPS said the information, including names, addresses and payment card details, of customers who used credit or debit cards at any of the 51 locations between January 20 and August 11, 2014 may have be compromised. The stores, according to a Law360 report, are spread across 24 states, yet represent roughly 1 percent of UPS’ franchised locations.
“I understand this type of incident can be disruptive and cause frustration. I apologize for any anxiety this may have caused our customers,” UPS Store President Tim Davis said. “As soon as we became aware of the potential malware intrusion, we deployed extensive resources to quickly address and eliminate this issue. Our customers can be assured that we have identified and fully contained the incident.”
The company says the malware was taken care of by August 11, with no incidents of fraud having been reported by customers. Additionally, UPS said it will provide customers whose information may have been stolen with complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection.
