Georgia Motorcycle Crashes Claim Two Lives

Two tragic motorcycle accidents in Georgia have resulted in the loss of both an impressive Georgia Tech graduate and veteran police officer in the span of just two weeks. Sergeant Woody Hudgens, 45, of Centerville, Georgia was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of Russell Parkway and Corder Road. Liam Rattray, who graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology just last month, was killed in the Little Five Points neighborhood when a drunk driver hit his motorcycle.

Sergeant Woody Hudgens was an officer at the Warner Robins Police Department for seventeen years, where he served as a member of the SWAT team, a bicycle officer, and a certified police instructor. He then served as a member of the Centerville Police Department for three years as a patrol sergeant, a bicycle officer, and a certified police instructor with a specialization in defensive tactics. An avid bicyclist, for six years in a row Hudgens rode across the state of Georgia to raise money for the Special Olympics. He was also a member of Southside Baptist Church, and was described as a man who loved his family, church, and community.

Liam Rattray was an impressive student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating Summa Cum Laude with accolades as an outstanding undergraduate researcher from the Ivan Allen College and outstanding student from the school of public policy. Rattray was born in London but had become an American citizen just three months prior to the accident. He was known as a dedicated researcher of organics and sustainability. He was the legislative aid for Georgia Organics, manager of the East Atlanta Village Farmers’ Market, started a university community-supported agriculture program with two dozen local Georgia farmers, and chaired the Georgia Institute of Technology Sustainable Food Committee. He lived in a school bus fueled by biodiesel, and was set to pursue a career in public policy and urban farming and education.

These two deadly accidents serve to remind us about the importance of motorcycle safety, on part of both riders and other motorists, and that the deadly effects of drunk driving are entirely avoidable.
