In a tragic crash on Friday, October 7, four members of the George family were killed when their SUV rolled multiple times. The Gwinnett County, Georgia family was traveling to Miami for a weekend at the beach when they lost control of their Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle rolled several times, ejecting six of the eight passengers. According to the Orlando Sentinel{target=”_blank”}, Florida state troopers reported that only one of the eight occupants was wearing a seatbelt. Kurt George, a survivor of the accident, refutes this claim, saying that only one of the passengers was without a proper restraint at the time of the accident.
The accident occurred near Ocala, Florida at around 3am. At the time of the accident, 17-year-old Darrian George was behind the wheel. Darrian, an honors student and promising basketball player at Norcross High School, was killed in the crash. Other victims of the crash were Kurt’s 30-year-old wife Tiffany, 7-year-old daughter Kyia, and 3-year-old Kayden. Survivors are 11-year-old daughter Jaid, Tiffany’s mother Erica Morris who is still in critical condition, and Tiffany’s aunt Jacquine Barrow. Florida law stipulates that the driver, passenger, and those occupants under 18 years old must wear seatbelts and that children less than four years old must be put in a child safety seat. An investigation is ongoing.
Police are currently investigating whether the car may have been sideswiped by a hit-and-run driver, causing it to lose control and tumble. Police say this is possible given markings found on the side of the car. Kurt George explains that only the children were asleep in the car right before the accident, claiming that the other occupants were wide awake making jokes and laughing. According to reports, Kurt George solemnly commented: “I hope and pray that no one will ever in their lifetime have to deal with this situation. Never take life itself, and loved ones – never take anyone – for granted.”
