Driver Charged With DUI in Atlanta Wrong-Way Accident

An unidentified man has been charged with a DUI after yet another wrong-way accident in the Metro Atlanta area. The driver was allegedly driving on the wrong side of Ga. 316 at Winder Highway in Gwinnett County. The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Friday. According to the police, several people called 911 to report the driver heading the wrong way just moments before the crash. So far the police have not released the names of the driver or anyone else involved in the accident.

The Ga. 316 accident was the third wrong-way accident in the last two weeks, according to Fox. Luckily, unlike the other two accidents and despite six injuries, Friday’s crash was not fatal. Of the six injuries, only two people were found to be in critical condition. According to The Examiner, all of the adults involved in the accident were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville, while the one child, a 12-year-old, was transported to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston.

The people in the Ga. 316 accident were all extremely lucky to escape with their lives. Driving drunk often results in fatalities. In 2009, 26% of traffic fatalities in Georgia involved alcohol, amounting to 394 deaths. Whenever a person drinks and drives they put everyone else on the road at risk. Unfortunately, millions of Americans throw caution to the wind every year and drive drunk. In 2006 alone, there were 17,600 fatalities in the United States that involved alcohol; these made up more than 40% of all traffic deaths.
