Biography

Ryan Maxey is an attorney in the Morgan & Morgan Business Trial Group, where he focuses on complex commercial litigation. Ryan has successfully represented clients in a variety of business matters, including contract disputes, shareholder derivative actions, partnership disputes, and business torts, among others. He has substantial experience handling cases from inception through trial, including both jury and bench trials.

Mr. Maxey is a native of Tampa, where he attended Plant High School and received his B.S. in Computer Science and his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of South Florida. He received his J.D. with honors from the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif.

Prior to joining Morgan & Morgan, he spent several years at the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A., one of the largest law firms in the world, where he developed significant experience working on high-dollar complex commercial litigation matters. He was also a law clerk to United States Magistrate Judge Elizabeth A. Jenkins in the Middle District of Florida, during which time he gained substantial experience related to federal practice and procedure. Mr. Maxey was named a “Rising Star” in 2015 and 2016 by Florida Super Lawyers magazine - an annual publication that recognizes the top 2.5% of the state’s young lawyers.

Before attending law school, he designed and wrote source code for custom software and designed and managed relational databases for an international industrial manufacturing and distribution company. Among other things, he developed and managed both the user interface and the back end database of an e-commerce system that serviced customers throughout the world.

  • Represented owner, developer and licensor of software and databases used by hospital systems in federal and state court lawsuits against former employees for misappropriation of trade secrets, civil theft, and tortious interference with business relationships.
  • Defended Florida limited liability company against claim that it violated its statutory duty of loyalty and care owed to an alleged member of the company.
  • Defended a leading producer and marketer of concentrated phosphate and potash against civil claims regarding reclamation of formerly mined lands.
  • Defended corporate owner of cell phone towers in a federal criminal trial that ended with an acquittal for an alleged violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
  • Represented foreign bank seeking to recover funds seized by the United States government in a civil forfeiture action.
  • Represented bank that acquired promissory note from FDIC in action to recover from individual who personally guaranteed the note.
  • Represented operator of outdoor advertisements in breach-of-contract claim against landlord for allowing competitor to erect outdoor advertisement on neighboring parcel.
  • Defended individual against civil fraud and breach-of-contract claims related to alleged exportation of new luxury vehicles.
  • Defended medical services company against civil claims related to its acquisition of software used to provide case management services to health care plans.
